Bizarre rescue of a child in Malaga raised in the wild

To say that fact is often stranger than fiction is something of an understatement following a bizarre case of child neglect and abandonment that has just been uncovered in the quiet Málaga town of Coín. Here, right next to the hustle and bustle of normal life, a teenager was found living ‘in the wild’ with her father.

On March 18, a disturbing scene unfolded near the La Trocha shopping centre, when Local Police officers happened upon a young girl and adult man who appeared to be living in a clapped-out car. Both people and vehicle were in a deplorable condition.

After consulting the police database to identify both people, an alert was activated from the ‘Supplementary Information Request at the National Entries’ system. This system allows the authorities to search a database of missing persons across the entire Schengen area.

The message that came back was that the teenager who had been discovered in Málaga was indeed reported missing, and considered extremely vulnerable. The instructions accompanying the alert indicated that the child should be moved to a safe place immediately upon being found due to the high risk of kidnapping by her father.

The Swiss authorities stressed that the girl’s father was considered dangerous to her, as there was a high risk that he could abduct her again.

The girl and her two sisters were what is sometimes known as ‘wolf children’, a term used to refer to those who have lived away from society for long periods of time, sometimes without any human contact, or who have been raised in the wild for years.

In this specific case, the three sisters had been raised by their father in a Swiss forest, without attending school or having contact with other people. There had also been no medical visits or regular health system checks.

The family, according to reports from Swiss social services, has always lived in vulnerable conditions, and the girls hadn’t seen their mother for six years. Reports suggest that both parents suffer from mental health difficulties.

Although the minor is 17 years old, the Swiss authorities have advised that her intellectual capacity is that of a very young girl.
