ARCHIVED - Corvera and San Javier airports will operate simultaneously
The transfer between airports will be carried out over a period of months
This is according to the Consejero for transport, Antonio Sevilla, speaking yesterday in the Regional Assembly.
This week the various departments of the regional government are presenting their departmental budgets for the coming year to the Regional Assembly and discussing the projects they will be undertaking during the next 12 months.
Yesterday the head of infrastructure and public works, Antonio Sevilla, presented the details relating to transport projects which have been budgeted for in the next 12 months, amongst them the topic of the airports of San Javier and Corvera.
He said that «AENA had reached the conclusion that it would not be practical to close one airport and open the other, “ so instead there would be a gradual transfer of personnel, and flight slots between the two airports. This would result in both airports operating at the same time, a situation which could last for between two and six months, depending on the technical issues encountered during the transfer. The decisions relating to the transfer would be made by the technicians of Aena, and Sr Sevilla said that he believed the transition plan between San Javier and Corvera would begin within four to five months.
The airport is still pending the formal certification relating to airport safety and formal approval of the flight paths and air space tested in the recent calibration flights.
There is very little infrastructural work remaining at Corvera airport, with just 107,000 euros remaining within the budgets to complete the electrical installations and other minor details.
There are relatively small numbers of flights operating in San Javier, but it will still be a logistical challenge to operate 2 customs posts, and 2 separate terminals, each with a full contingent of staff, security and services, if the personnel from San Javier are transferring to Corvera and will be required to maintain 2 sets of installations.
The airport concessionary has given an April date for the commencement of operations at Corvera, co-inciding with the annual upturn in visitor numbers over Easter and leading into the summer tourist season.
All postings relating to Corvera airport can be accessed via the Corvera section in the map box at the bottom of every page, or by using the universal word search at the top of the home page : simply type in the word Corvera and any articles with that word in the title will appear, newest at the top.
Lorca
Nearly 40% of the entire annual budget has been allocated to infrastructural works in the municipality of Lorca. 44 million euros will be spent repairing roads and districts badly damaged during the May 2011 earthquake, nearly two thirds of which has come from a loan given by the European investment bank. The majority of the roads affected were those which linked Lorca to the remainder of the region in the East and South, and include roads leading to Puerto Lumbreras which were further damaged during the Gota Fria on September 28th this year.
Other investments during the coming year will be 2.73 million euros to continue the works on the N332 which links Cartagena to Mazarrón, paralysed for the last year and 3 million to improve the stretch of the A5 which links the A30 with La Alcayna.
