ARCHIVED - Covid-19 fatalities in Spain continue to fall
On Sunday 399 new deaths were recorded in Spain; the lowest since March 24th
The number of cured cases passes the 80,000 mark
On Monday lunchtime the director of the Coordination Centre for Health Alerts and Emergencies, Fernando Simón, presented the daily Covid-19 figures compiled on Sunday evening, and although there is always a reluctance to be too optimistic on a Monday due to delays in compiling statistics over the weekend due to lower staffing levels, which often generates lower figures on a Monday, he went so far as to say that the results today were “encouraging figures" regardless of the adjustments that must be made, because they confirm a decrease in the number of deaths in Spain and a general slowing down of the hospitalisations.
During the last 24 hours a further 399 new fatalities have been registered, bringing the total number of deaths to 20,852. This is the first time that the number of deaths has dropped below 400 since the 24th March and represents a 2.05% increase against the figures for Saturday, the lowest percentage increase since the beginning of the State of Emergency.
To date, 80,587 individuals have been cured, a rise of 3,230 in the last 24 hours, figures described as “very good” by the director.
The number of new cases is also the lowest since the 17th March, at 4,266 bringing the total up to 200,210.
This particular set of data is the most difficult to interpret, as last week the criteria by which cases were counted across Spain changed and the 17 Autonomous Communities must now provide and measure data by a different set of parameters, taking into consideration the location in which a patient died regardless of whether this is a hospital or care centre and the new testing methods being used to gain a wider understanding of the spread of the virus throughout Spain.
Simón explained that out of the total cases currently diagnosed, the PCR tests had identified 191,164 and 9,046 had been identified using the new rapid test kits.
(Rapid tests do not test for Covid-19 itself but for the antibodies which the immune system produces to combat infection. For this reason it is relatively unreliable in newly infected patients, giving only 60-80% accuracy, but at the same time it is capable of revealing cases of patients who have already recovered without presenting serious symptoms, as the antibodies remain present after the virus itself has disappeared. This form of test has the advantage that it yields rapid results without the need for significant laboratory facilities, so is cheap and quick.
The other form of testing is called PCR, which requires laboratory analyses, so is slow and expensive but acurate.)
Now that the supply of rapid tester kits has increased, more than 700,000 tests are being carried out weekly across Spain, and the fact that there has not been a significant increase in the number of cases, he said, demonstrates that the level of contagion is “decreasing more” than had previously been believed.
During the last days of March and the first days of April 26.8 per cent of the PCR tests were giving positive results, but last week that percentage had dropped to 3.1 per cent.
Although it has to be factored in that the number of tests is greater and is being carried out across a wider cross-section of the public rather than those specifically entering hospital with Covid symptoms, the percentage changes are so large that this appears to prove that the virus is being contained and is spreading slower as a result of the lockdown measures.
Madrid remains the Region of Spain (Autonomous Community) with the highest number of cases 56,963 followed by Cataluña 41. Andalucía has 11,323; Aragón 4,886; Asturias 2,348 ; Balearic islands 1,788; Canary islands 2,067; Cantabria 2,083 ; Castilla-La Mancha 16,796 ; Castilla y León 15,857 ; Ceuta 111; Comunidad Valenciana, 10,018; Extremadura 3,186; Galicia 8,299 ; Melilla 104; Murcia, 1,646; Navarra, 4,697; Basque Country 12,628; and La Rioja 3,734.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.
