ARCHIVED - Distribution of Covid cases by municipality for the Region of Murcia this week
38 of the 45 municipalities have recorded cases in the last 14 days
Ayto-Totana showing municipal workers in a safe, sanitised environment.
The weekly study examining in depth the evolution of the covid virus in the Region of Murcia was published on Wednesday evening and clearly shows that the virus is continuing to extend right across the region, and this week three more municpalities have joined the active cases list.
It has been a fairly dark week for the region, which has recorded its highest daily total ever (on Thursday) and is now registering the highest number of active cases since the pandemic began.
Although the cases are focused in several Covid "hotspots" (Murcia City now the biggest, Totana, Lorca, Mazarrón, Molina de Segura) there are cases right around the region, indeed, it could be argued that more caution is required at this moment than at any time during the pandemic and lockdown to date as in general, the public is more relaxed and there are more cases out there than at any other time and although most of us are observing sensible precautions, there are daily reports on social media of groups of young people ignoring the restrictions and having private parties at home without masks and social distancing, and individuals compromising the resolve of other people to take precautions by thoughtless actions.
All that can be said is that the regional government is a lot better prepared, is a lot quicker at contact tracing, is implementing more rigid systems to control local outbreaks by working with local councils and social services to ensure that those who are told to quarantine do so, that their movements are monitored by local police, that social services are in touch co-ordinating shopping to help anyone quarantining and that the public is well-informed about the potential risks to their health in specific areas.
We all have ample access to information to help us make rational, intelligent decisions about our own safety, and should we choose not to, then that is our own decision.
All that can be said is that it is illogical not to view the current evolution of figures as a warning of how complicated the autumn could be and to make decisions about the forthcoming weeks based on the probable evolution of the virus. On a personal level, this can be as simple as stocking up on a few extra books from the charity shop, making sure that there are a few spare essential medications or household items in the cupboard or a few extra treats in the freezer just in case of an unexpected localised lockdown.
Contrary to unsubstantiated reports on social media, there has been NO indication AT ALL from the national Government that any widespread lockdowns are planned, and decisions are being made at a regional level by regional governments based on the local situation. That's not to say that areas won´t be confined, they may well be, and this may present inconveniences to residents, but being aware that this MAY happen in the coming weeks gives us the opportunity NOW to plan just in case.
Forewarned is forearmed as they say; helps to prevent panic and unnecessary inconvenience.
The figures below show the breakdown by municipality and relate to the amount of positive tests diagnosed by PCR swab test during the last 14 days.
What the figures clearly show is that although the well-publicised outbreaks are clearly identifiable by the larger numbers of figures, that there is clear evidence of a much wider spread of contagion than most residents probably understood, and that covid cases have been reported in municipalities which were largely covid-free during the lockdown and peak weeks of the epidemic.
This is the spread of new cases diagnosed in the last 14 days by municipality:

Cases by health area:
The number of cases by health area is an interesting indicator of how cases are distributed, the incidence per 100,000/ population (IA*) giving a clearer idea of where the virus is centred.
Looking at the results for the last 14 days, the focal points of the contagions can clearly be seen as the denser urban areas and the known outbreaks. The health areas of Lorca, Cartagena (which includes Mazarrón),Murcia east (city), Murcia west and Vega media del Segura which includes Molina de Segura and the lower area of the Ricote Valley, all have the highest number of cases and IA*.
The lowest areas are the north-west, Altiplano, the higher areas of the Segura river valley and the Mar Menor.
It's interesting to see these figures as they show that the focal points of the infections have been largely due to contagions within the resident and business community of the region and are not due to tourists from outside areas bringing cases of Covid with them.
Indeed, the number of cases amongst the coastal areas which currently have the higher populations at the moment, are considerably lower than could have been the case. This is being attributed to the "outdoor life" in holiday areas, with most holidaymakers out on the beach and observing social distancing, and the precautions being taken to protect them. Had the discos and clubs not been closed there could have been a much higher incidence, but at the moment, coastal areas are keeping the cases down.
Obviously this is a highly fluid situation and it only takes one botellón gathering of young people to drastically change that situation, but this is how it is at the moment.
Age
The average age of confirmed cases has fallen by one year in the last 7 days and is now is 44 in men and 45 in women.
Figures released by the regional health authority and national government are posted daily in the news section of Murcia Today. These municipal figures are only published once a week.
