ARCHIVED - Incidence rate of almost 100, but hospital pressure decreases: Andalusia Covid update November 29
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
No cases of Omicron variant detected in the region yet, but authorities urge people to be cautious
14-day incidence rate in Andalucía since March 2020
Not a bad weekend in terms of Covid stats in Andalucía. The number of new daily infections has dropped since last week, though the incidence rate has risen over a weekend when the Spanish and UK governments, among others, have put in place new travel restrictions in response to the Omicron variant. Importantly, though, there have been more people released from hospital, freeing up hospital beds and showing that the spike in cases isn’t putting more pressure on health workers.
New infections
There were fewer new infections this weekend – just 883 over the last 48 hours, which isn’t bad when compared with the more than 1,000 daily infections in the region last week.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in Andalucía has risen by almost ten points since Friday to 99.5 per 100,000. Under the new traffic light system for Covid alert levels, this means that the region will not yet be on medium alert it passes 100, and won’t be unless the incidence rate rises to 150.
While the incidence rate is close to 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, it’s worth remembering that last February this figure was 780, and even then there weren’t collapses or dysfunctions in the health system.
The highest cumulative incidence rate is in the population segment between 30 and 45 years old and among children under 14 years old.
Hospitalisations
The Regional Minister for Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, has stressed that the disparity in the figures is due to the fact that there has been an increase in the number of positive cases among people with a full vaccination schedule, which means that their prognosis is not so bad and recovery time is quicker.
Andalusian hospitals have ten fewer hospitalised patients on Monday, with 255 beds for Covid patients, although ICU occupancy has increased.
Deaths
One more person died from Covid in Andalucía over the weekend.
Recovered
People who become infected continue to get better, with nearly 700 people in the region having overcome the disease this weekend, up to a total of 796,556 since the pandemic began.
Vaccinations
The Health Minister also assured that by the middle of this week, people between 60 and 65 years of age will be able to make an appointment to get their third dose of the vaccine.
He also claimed that children would also probably be vaccinated in mid-December, when some 200,000 doses of individualised vaccines are expected to be administered.
