Booster jab may now be given to over-60s in response to alarming rise in new cases and incidence rate
The number of daily infections in Andalucía is slowly working its way back up to unacceptable levels amid fears of a sixth wave of coronavirus as we head into the Christmas period.
We’re definitely going in the wrong direction, and though there’s no official talk of it yet, it may be time to start thinking about reintroducing some Covid restrictions as a preventative measure.
New infections
Andalucía recorded a total of 439 coronavirus infections in 24 hours on Friday 12 November, lower than the 467 infections on Thursday but higher than the 395 on Wednesday, 289 on Tuesday, 290 on Monday and Sunday, 363 on Saturday, and 422 last Friday.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in Andalucía increased two points in 24 hours and is now at 42.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, up from 34.6 last Friday and 33.9 the Friday before that.
Hospitalisations
Andalucía recorded a rise of four hospitalised patients for Covid-19 on Friday 12 November compared to Thursday, rising up to a total of 182. That’s 13 more than last week, while patients admitted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are at 34, one less than last week.
Deaths
One death has been reported in Seville today, the same number as yesterday and four fewer than this time last week. This brings the total number of deaths in Seville province to 2,329 since the start of the pandemic.
Vaccinations
Andalucía is considering giving the third dose of the vaccine to over-60s and health workers in the region. Currently, only over-70s may get a booster jab for Covid in Andalucía, but on Wednesday November 10 the Minister of Health and Families, Jesús Aguirre, agreed to extend the vaccination programme to those over 60 years old because of a noted increase in the incidence rate in the 60-69 age group.
Mr Aguirre announced that he would “extend the third dose of the vaccine to all health and social health professionals and to all people over the age of 60, seeing that the cumulative incidence in the 60-69 age group is increasing, although the one that is increasing the most is the 30-50 age group, where there have been fewer people who have voluntarily been vaccinated.”
