ARCHIVED - Malaga accounts for almost half of Covid deaths in Andalusia: Covid update September 13
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Despite the death toll, the number of new Covid-19 infections has fallen in Malaga and hospitalisations remain stable
Coronavirus infections in the province of Malaga have fallen in the last four days, with 141 new positive cases between now and last Friday, which represents a reduction of 171 compared to the 312 cases reported last Friday.
These are the official figures, but the real figures are higher, as since March 28 of this year, only those over 60 years of age, the immunocompromised and pregnant women are counted among the number of newly infected, meaning an unknown number of infections do not enter the official registers.
However, there were five deaths connected with coronavirus in Malaga alone in comparison with 14 in Andalusia as a whole, meaning the province on the Costa del Sol accounts for more deaths than in any other place.
New infections
Andalusia has had 698 new cases of coronavirus since last Friday. The accumulated total of cases since the beginning of the pandemic amounts to 1,600,060 in Andalusia, once the 698 infections of the last 92 hours have been added.
Hospitalisations
The section that best defines the current state of the pandemic is that of hospitalisations due to Covid. There are 40 patients with coronavirus in hospitals in Malaga, four of whom are in intensive care units (ICU). These figures indicate that admissions, both in wards and ICUs, are contained; there has been little change since Friday, when 39 people were hospitalised (three in intensive care).
In Andalusia as a whole, the number of patients admitted to hospital with an infection caused by Covid is 196 (20 more than four days earlier); of these, 11 are in intensive care (two more than in the previous update of the data by the Regional Ministry of Health).
Cumulative incidence rate
The cumulative incidence (AI) in the over-60s, the only rate currently taken into account, has fallen again in Andalusia to 86.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The decrease has been 6.5 points in four days. The incidence is measured in this population group because the complications and severity of an infection caused by SARS-CoV-2 tend to increase with increasing age.
Deaths
In terms of mortality, the Junta has reported five deaths of patients suffering from Covid in the province of Malaga and 14 in the entire Andalusia region, bringing the total number of deaths to 2,653 and 15,138, respectively. However, it should be mentioned that in this phase of the pandemic, a high number of deaths are of people who die with Covid, but who are killed by another pathology.
