WATCH: Tourist attacked by Costa del Sol donkey taxi driver

A video of a foreign tourist being attacked by a donkey taxi driver in the popular Malaga resort of Mijas has set the internet alight, with animal activists applauding the holidaymaker’s attempts to highlight the exploitation faced by equines on the Costa del Sol.

According to the Animal Rights Party PACMA, who posted the footage online, the very same taxi driver verbally abused and threatened a member of their group just days earlier.

The disturbing video shows the driver rushing at the tourist, who was filming the donkeys lined up along the curb for his own social media page. As a scuffle ensues, somebody else grabs the camera and continues filming while the taxi driver attacks the man in the middle of the street.

Needless to say, the tourist, whose face was cut and glasses were broken, has filed a complaint with the police and demanded that the animal’s owner lose his licence.

These events occurred days after the same driver threatened the coordinator of PACMA in Fuengirola and Mijas, Isabel Ardao, telling her that she was “asking for trouble.”

According to PACMA, the man called Ms Ardao a "sl*t" and a "b**ch" for trying to record the license plate of a donkey-taxi that was providing service after the 9.30pm deadline, when, according to the local law, animals must be allowed to rest.

Each year, the group organises a demonstration against donkey taxis under the slogan ‘Cut their rope’ and PACA has repeatedly appealed to the Mijas council to “set an expiry date for the controversial service, which has raised constant complaints and claims among residents and visitors due to the poor conditions in which the animals are kept, which must endure very high temperatures and long working days in summer."

PACMA itself lodged a complaint with the Guardia Civil against the assault of the tourist, in addition to two filed in the last few days over the working conditions of the donkeys.
