ARCHIVED - Covid cases in Murcia Region rise by 155 on Friday to 1757
ARCHIVED ARTICLE Another “record day” for the Murcia region as cases continue to rise
It’s a scenario the authorities had desperately hoped to avoid, but with still 2 weeks to go before children are due to return to school, the numbers of covid cases in not only the region of Murcia, but also Spain as a whole, continue to rise to levels not seen since the height of the pandemic.
Yesterday the Director of the CCAES Fernando Simón came as near to admitting as he’s come to date, that the figures are starting to look very worrying saying, “ we can´t be happy with the figures, but we can´t say that the epidemic is out of control at a national level. Although in some specific points, perhaps it is.”
“Nobody should be confused , “ he said, “things aren´t going well,” as Spain registered over 7,000 cases on Thursday.
In the Murcia region, every case is a new record high, and on Friday the record high was not only the number of cases recorded to date, but also the largest number of cases recorded in a single day, with 155 new cases.
In the last 24 hours, 53 new infections have been recorded in the municipality of Murcia (which yesterday announced the creation of new Covid testing points and a raft of measures to help the municipality minimise the worrying spread of the virus currently being experienced), 20 in Cartagena, 10 in Fuente Álamo, 8 in Alhama de Murcia, 7 in Alcantarilla, 7 in Lorca, 7 in San Javier and 7 in Molina de Segura. The rest are spread around various other municipalities in smaller numbers.
The Region of Murcia has quintupled Covid hospital admissions since July 19th, going from 21 hospitalized on that date to 106 last Wednesday, while the number of patients in the ICU has gone from one to 15 in the same period.
This is the detail made available on Wednesdays in the weekly epidemiological report of the Ministry of Health last published on August 19th and provides more detail than the daily figures.
By municipalities, Murcia has registered 377 positives in the last fortnight and 181 in the last week, which represents a cumulative incidence (AI) of 83.2 and 39.9 cases per million inhabitants, respectively.
Since the coronavirus pandemic began, the municipalities with the most affected have been Murcia (1,971); Cartagena (720); Lorca (432); Totana (355); Molina de Segura (274); Yecla (180) and Mazarrón (175).
However, taking the cumulative incidence (AI) as a reference, the municipalities most affected by Covid-19 are Abanilla (1,403.6 cases per million inhabitants); Totana (1,109.1); Calasparra (677.9); Santomera (647.9); Mazarrón (543.3) and Yecla (522.8).
As of Friday, we now have 112 patients in hospital and 15 in intensive care, with a further 1645 patients in home isolation.
The number of fatalities remains the same at 155 and the total of individuals cured has risen to 2,368. In addition, a further 1706 people have tested positive for antibodies, but are no longer positive, so technically, these can also be added to the number of cured.
The region has now carried out nearly 200,000 tests for Covid; 128,570 via PCR and 64,482 using the rapid antibody system.
During the last 24 hours, more than 2,123 PCR tests were carried out and the total number of cases has risen to 5,986 people in the Region of Murcia since the beginning of the pandemic.
