Explained: Everything you need to know about the new Digital Nomad Visa in Spain

There are many good reasons to move to Spain, from the abundant sunshine hours and miles and miles of sandy beaches to the relaxed pace of life and the fact that there are plenty of flights from the UK, but sometimes it can be a challenge to work out how you’re going to support yourself and make a living in Spain.

That’s why the country’s new Digital Nomad Visa is such good news for British expats wanting to relocate to Spain, as it will let them continue to work for their current company from the comfort of their new home in Spain.

The ‘90 days in 180’ rule and non-lucrative visas

As it stands, anyone wanting to work remotely in Spain for a company or clients outside the EU – for example in the UK or the USA – are only allowed to stay in the country for 90 days out of every 180.

If you want to stay longer, you’ll need to get a visa. One option to be able to live in Spain is to get a non-lucrative visa (NLV) but as the name suggests, this type of visa does not allow you to undertake any type of economic activity, such as working, so a non-lucrative visa is more suitable for people who wish to retire to Spain.

What is the Digital Nomad Visa?

Those who want to live in Spain and work remotely for a company outside the country can benefit from the Spanish government’s recently announced ‘Startup Act’, which removes red tape and lowers taxes in order to make Spain a more attractive prospect for new business startups and investment.

Part of this is the introduction of the Digital Nomad Visa in 2023, which will allow non-EU citizens who work for companies or clients outside Spain to settle there temporarily, without having to apply for a full work visa.

How do I apply for the Digital Nomad Visa in Spain?

Applicants for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa will have to be able to prove that they have been working remotely for at least a year and have a contract of employment or, if they work freelance, that they have been regularly employed by a single company.

You also need to be able to show that you have sufficient income to support yourself with funds of up to 2,000 euros a month, and have an address which you can use as your legal residence in Spain.

What’s more, with the Digital Nomad Visa, spouses and dependent children are able to join the visa holder in Spain.

How long can I live in Spain on a Digital Nomad Visa?

The Digital Nomad Visa lasts for up to 12 months, but you can have the option to renew it for up to five years, giving you greater flexibility and the option to live in Spain long term.

Can I work for a Spanish company with the Digital Nomad Visa?

If you have a Digital Nomad Visa, you can also work for a Spanish company or clients in Spain, as long as these do not make up more than 20% of your income.

How much money do I have to pay in taxes if I get the Digital Nomad Visa?

While the final details are yet to be worked out before the bill comes into force, income is likely to be taxed at the non-resident rate of 15% rather than the usual 24%.
